The most basic need for an AC Power Source is Frequency Conversion. This need is due to three basic frequencies (50, 60, and 400Hz) that are used around the world. Where a voltage may be changed through the use of a transformer or variac, changing frequency requires a conversion process.

Converting Frequency can be accomplished using a rotary type device like a Motor-Generator Set (GenSet for short) or through the use of a solid-state frequency converter. GenSets have been used for many years but have limitations when compared to a solid-state device. Factors that should be considered when looking for a frequency converter are the load’s power factor, crest factor, inrush current requirements, load balance (in 3-phase systems), voltage regulation, response time, and frequency regulation.

GenSets usually have a lesser capability of supplying the low power factor required by some of today’s AC systems. A typical GenSet can handle a power factor from 0.7 to 1.0, where a solid-state device can usually handle the entire power factor range. High Inrush or starting current is sometimes required to start motors or other types of loads which have high currents when turned on and drop off quickly as the load warms up. GenSets are not as well equipped to handle these short term overloads as a solid-state device.

Voltage and frequency regulation are more precise in a solid-state device for all types of loads. In most cases load balance on three phase systems is not an issue with a solid-state device. 3-phase solid state devices regulate each phase individually without affecting the other phases, where a GenSet cannot alter the speed of the generator for one phase without affecting another phases.

Pacific Power Source started offering solid state 400Hz frequency converters in the early 1970’s. Since then a wide variety of systems have been supplied to organizations like yours for frequency conversion. From small units of 500VA up to a multi-cabinet 750kVA system, Pacific’s customers have come to expect products which are designed with long term use in mind. Many systems are still in use today that were installed over 20 years ago.

Contact Pacific Power Source with any of your frequency conversion or AC power source needs. Pacific’s Application Engineers are available to discuss your AC Power Requirements and to help in selecting the right power source for your application.
